We investigated Spartina alterniflora invasions, their relationship with shoreline dynamics and effects on crab communities in the Yellow River estuary, China, where shoreline dynamics have been accelerated due to human-mediated estuarine sediment deposition and sea-level rise. We determined the distribution of Spartina with extensive ground surveys, and quantified shoreline dynamics between 2001 and 2009 by interpreting satellite images. We used pitfall traps to sample crab populations in Spartina-invaded habitats and non-invaded mudflats in 2009 and 2010. Large areas (>0.5 km2) of Spartina plants were found at three locations in the estuary. The seaward limit of Spartina at each location generally coincided with the present shoreline, regardless of historical shoreline advance or retreat. Crab communities in Spartina-invaded habitats significantly differed from those in non-invaded habitats. The total number and biomass of crabs caught per trap were much higher in Spartina-invaded habitats than in non-invaded habitats, however, species richness and Shannon diversity were much lower. These results suggest that Spartina invasions are likely to keep pace with shoreline dynamics accelerated by global change and have significant ecological consequences for crab communities. These issues should be taken into account to improve the use and management of Spartina, especially in rapidly accreting estuaries with large-area mudflats that are important habitats but prone to Spartina invasions. 相似文献

The objective of this work was to study the effect of plant presence (Phragmites australis) and inoculant origin on wetland mesocosm start-up dynamics. Eight mesocosms were studied based on a duplicated 22 factorial design tracking bacterial community and hydrological changes during an 8 month start-up period. The mesocosms were characterized in terms of their hydrological character based on evapotranspiration (ET), porosity, and a dispersion coefficient. The microbiological regime was characterized using a microbial activity measure and community-level physiological profiling (CLPP) employing BIOLOG™ ECO plates. CLPP-related indices such as substrate richness, substrate diversity, over-all community profile, and community divergence are also presented. It was found that mesocosm porosities decreased over time as a result of media-related biofilm development. This biofilm development also contributed to a substantial increase in the dispersion coefficient in the mesocosms over the start-up period. Dispersion coefficients in planted systems reached values of ∼50-55 cm2/min whereas in the unplanted systems values of ∼30-35 cm2/min were observed. Bacterial community divergence in the mesocosms was quantified using a Euclidean-based divergence metric. All mesocosms showed a sharp increase in community divergence until day 75, at which point a steady state was reached. The interstitial communities were also characterized in terms of similarity based on the experimental design treatments. Four stages of mesocosm development were identified that can be described by an initial community state based on the origins of the initial inoculum [days 0-6]; a dynamic period where adjustments and shifts in the bacterial community occurred in all mesocosms [days 7-26]; a period where all interstitial CLPPs were quite similar [days 27-73]; and finally a shift towards unplanted and planted mesocosm CLPP groupings [days 74-232]. 相似文献

Straightened channels and altered and drained adjacent riparian wetlands have adversely impacted streams and rivers throughout the US Midwest. This research investigated the biological connection and water quality of a 0.07 ha diversion wetland and adjacent stream at the Olentangy River Wetland Research Park in central Ohio. Before the flowthrough conditions were established, we demonstrated with mark and recapture techniques that the wetland already was a biorefuge for fish under extreme conditions; two species (Centrarchidae) captured in the stream before a total drawdown of the stream were found in the wetland a year later. In addition, water at the bottom remained at around 4 °C over the winter likely due to groundwater input, which possibly provided a warmer shelter for fish. Stream water quality of the lower section, downstream of the wetland outlet, generally improved with hydrologic pulsing in spring after flow-through reconnection due to the trapping of nutrients in the wetland. Mean removal per flood pulse for nitrate-nitrite, total nitrogen (TN), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), total phosphorus (TP) were 1.81 g-N m−2 per pulse, 1.02 g-N m−2 per pulse, 0.014 g-P m−2 per pulse, and 0.004 g-P m−2 per pulse, respectively. The wetland exported 2.8 g-C m−2 per pulse of organic carbon. A greater attenuation of NO3− and TP occurred in the marshy outlet channel section of the wetland than the open water section. The diversion wetland successfully removed nitrate and phosphorus during storm pulses in spring. Three mesocosm wetlands (250 cm × 100 cm × 100 cm) with different wetland plants (Calamgrostis angustifolia, CA, Carex lasiocarpa, CL, and C. angustifolia/C. lasiocarpa mixture, AL, respectively) and hydrologic regimes were set to test migration and retention of exogenous dissolved iron ((NH4)2Fe(SO4)2of 40 mg Fe(II) L−1) in the Sanjiang Plain Wetland in northeast China. The experiment was designed as two stages: open migration period (OMP) for 1.5 d and close retention period (CRP) for 28.5 d. Based on the outflow Fe(II) concentration during the OMP, retention efficiencies (RE) and iron retention fluxes adjusted by area (RFad) in the three mesocosm wetlands were calculated, and the migration of iron were modeled using the first-order kinetic model. Outflow pH decreased gradually from a weak alkaline condition to a weak acid condition during the OMP, and then increased during the CRP, while outflow Eh and DO decreased during the experiment. The three mesocosm wetlands had considerable RE ranging from 75% to 98%, with the averaged RFad of 4.31 ± 0.17, 4.20 ± 0.16, and 4.37 ± 0.13 g m−2 h−1 for CA, CL, and AL, respectively. The reduction conditions in the mesocosm wetlands developed after 4 d or 12 d and the former retained iron during the OMP became mobile and discharged primarily in the form of Fe(III). The first-order kinetic model could simulate the outflow concentration of dissolved iron during the OMP (R2 = 0.91, 0.69, and 0.68 for CA, CL, and AL, respectively), while the outflow dissolved iron during the CMP was difficult to model because the changed pH and Eh conditions in the mesocosm wetlands cause the former precipitated iron to be mobile after several days. 相似文献

Dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations have often been shown to be important to decomposition rates of plant litter and thus may be a key factor in determining the supply of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and carbon-dependent denitrification in wetlands. During the 2 months operation, DOC accumulation in anaerobic condition was superior to aerobic condition due to higher activities of hydrolase enzymes and lower hydrolysates converted to gaseous C. Also, much higher denitrification rates were observed in wetland when using anaerobic litter leachate as the carbon source, and the available carbon source (ACS) could be used as a good predictor of denitrification rate in wetland. According to the results of this study, extracellular enzymes activities (EEAs) in wetland would change as a short-term consequence of DO. 为了探讨湿地不同生境对昆虫物种多样性的影响,对扎龙湿地8种生境的昆虫进行了系统调查.共捕获昆虫5822只,分属11目58科143种,其中直翅目、双翅目、蜻蜒目为扎龙湿地的优势类群.不同生境中,草原草甸昆虫多样性最高,湖边生境多样性指数和均匀度指数均较高,杂草甸均最低.聚类分析和主分量分析结果表明,不同生境的昆虫群落相似性与水资源状况和植被类型有关,捕食性类群种类数和个体数量对昆虫群落稳定性具有重要的调控作用.湖边生境昆虫群落稳定性最强,湿草甸稳定性最弱.湿地水资源状况能影响昆虫生存生境,进而影响昆虫群落的组成和分布格局. 相似文献

An approach to modelling food web biomass flows among live and dead compartments within and among species is formulated using metaphysiological principles that characterise population growth in terms of basal metabolism, feeding, senescence and exploitation. This leads to a unified approach to modelling interactions among plants, herbivores, carnivores, scavengers, parasites and their resources. Also, dichotomising sessile miners from mobile gatherers of resources, with relevance to feeding and starvation time scales, suggests a new classification scheme involving 10 primary categories of consumer types. These types, in various combinations, rigorously distinguish scavenger from parasite, herbivory from phytophagy and detritivore from decomposer. Application of the approach to particular consumer-resource interactions is demonstrated, culminating in the construction of an anthrax-centred food web model, with parameters applicable to Etosha National Park, Namibia, where deaths of elephants and zebra from the bacterial pathogen, Bacillus anthracis, provide significant subsidies to jackals, vultures and other scavengers. 相似文献
